To me, September is the kick-off of the best time of the year. Days begin to get cooler and festive fall décor makes an appearance. This is truly my favorite time of the year and I’m ready to say goodbye to the summer and get started on my favorite fall traditions!

In my family, one of our favorite things to do when the weather starts cooling down is to take a hike. Taking a day trip to a nearby state park can’t be beat, and seeking out a new spot with a breathtaking view keeps things interesting. We love the fall for hiking because you don’t get worn down as quickly, and the weather is nice enough for the dogs to join in. Grab your pup and seek out a spot to hike!

Some of my favorite spots within driving distance from Nashville are Rock Island State Park, Fall Creek Falls State Park, or any trail you can find along the Natchez Trace Parkway!

This time of year is also perfect for getting cozy. Bringing warmer colors and textures into your home will really get you into the spirit! Soft blankets and candles can be used in most spaces to elicit a cozy feeling.

Fall activities are beginning to pop up, and what better way to ring in the new season than going to a local farm for fruit picking, a corn maze, and homemade treats? Going to these events really helps out your local farmers and creates memories that you and your family will cherish!

A favorite spot of mine is Lucky Ladd Farms. Their Fall Festival begins September 21st and includes activities for people of all ages, including flower picking, a pumpkin patch, animal encounters, and walking trails.

Another fall activity we love in Nashville is Cheekwood Harvest, featuring pumpkin houses, local artwork, and on special occasions food vendors and live music!

If you have a garden, you don’t need to give up on it just because summer is coming to a close! There are plenty of frost-tolerant and even frost-hardy veggies that you can start this time of year. Some veggies you can get started now are arugula, mustard greens, radishes, spinach, kale, or broccoli. Some of these will need to be harvested before the first frost, but for others the frost adds a bit of flavor that you won’t get otherwise!
