Family Favorite Apple Pie

Growing up one of my favorite things to do as soon as the weather started to cool off was bake pies with my grandmother. For me, it is always so fun and comforting being in the kitchen with family making something from scratch. Apple and pumpkin are everyone’s favorite fall flavors, so every year I would make the apple pie and my sister would make the pumpkin. Both of these pie recipes are not only super delicious but easy! Today i’m going to share with you step-by-step how to make my favorite apple pie!

Make your dough

For this you’ll need :

  • 2 cups of all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 6 tablespoons of butter
  • 6 tablespoons of shortening
  • 6 to 8 tablespoons of ice water

Step 1:

In a large bowl mix together your flower, salt, and sugar. 

Step 2:

Add in your butter, shortening, and COLD water. Slowly mix everything together until it forms a dough. 

Step 3:

Wrap your dough in plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator while you make the filling. 

Make your filling

For this you’ll need:

  • 5 green apples
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice

Step 1:

Peal and thinly chop your green apples. Place apples in cold water with about 1 tablespoon of lemon juice so they don’t brown while you work on the rest of your pie filling. 

Step 2:

In a large mixing bowl combine your sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, and vinegar. Mix together until resembles wet sand texture. 

Step 3:

Drain your apples and add them to your filling mixture. Stir together until your apples are coated in the filling. 

Assemble

Step 1:

Half your dough and roll out on parchment paper until your crust is big enough to cover your pie dish. 

Step 2:

Add the dough to your pie dish and poke holes in the bottom with a fork for ventilation. 

Step 3:

Add your filling

Step 4:

Cover with the other half of your pie crust. (It doesn’t have to look perfect, it will still taste delicious!)

Final step:

Bake in a 400 degree oven for 50-60 minutes, or until golden and brown.

When your pie is done, take out of the oven and enjoy!
