Spring is finally here! Which means it is time for my favorite spring activity, gardening. I love to kickoff the gardening season with my herb garden so I can enjoy it all season long and into the summer. Having fresh herbs in your garden means easy access when cooking or making fun spring cocktails. I love adding fresh basil to pizza or cilantro to tacos (my favorite). Herbs can be grown in pots, raised garden beds, or straight in the ground. Most thrive with lots of sun and moist soil. Spring is the time to start your herbs from seed or purchase sprouted herbs at your favorite gardening center. Here are my favorites and some fun gardening supplies we have in the Emporium to get you started!
Parsley
The herb I like to start with is parsley. It is the perfect garnish for any dishes to add a pop of green to the plate.
Chives
Chives are up next and a must have for me. Much like parsley, it is delicious sprinkled on top of many dishes. I love the oniony kick it gives to potato salad for sunny day picnics.
Green Onions
My favorite way to enjoy green onions is in a stir fry. Toss in the whites while cooking and top with the greens! They are a great way to add some color and lots of flavor.
Cilantro
Folks either love it or hate it. Personally, cilantro is my all-time favorite herb. As a Mexican food fanatic, it is perfect for adding to fresh pico de gallo, mixing into rice, or garnishing steak tacos.
Basil
Basil is a fantastic fast-growing herb and pollinator, making it a perfect addition to any spring garden. I will make fresh pesto all season long with my basil to add to pasta dishes or toss with veggies. There are some fun varieties of basil too like lemon!
